I thin...Thanks for sharing this article, Felicia!

I think I first saw the footage on the news without actually hearing what he said...and he didn't strike me as particularly thug-like then, either. He seemed like a very energized football player who just won a major game. From the response, I almost assumed he must have said something really terrible, so when I actually listened to the audio I was really confused.Sarah Shugarshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11252603761979082744noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3857039602046762644.post-3178429820956399552014-01-23T15:50:10.351-08:002014-01-23T15:50:10.351-08:00Wow Sarah, I think I was in the same semi-media zo...Wow Sarah, I think I was in the same semi-media zone as you. I am so disconnected from sports and what happens in the real that I went through the same sussing out what happened as you.

I have a couple of good FB friends of color who post meaningful insights and subscribe to more than one alt news site so, I started to care like you when this backlash was seen as having a racial bias.

When I finally read the quote from Sherman, I thought that doesn't sound at all "thug-like" and I definitely went to the camp of this is one of those instances of where the behavior of a non-white person is held to some higher standard or is the target for some unsettled white angst over our shifting culture.

My Seahawks guru Margaret posted this Huffington Post piece by Isaac Saul and its gives me and even greater insight into the complexity of Sherman as a person. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/isaac-saul/what-richard-sherman-taught-us_b_4631980.html?utm_hp_ref=fb&src=sp&comm_ref=false. We too often don't see the depth of the sterotyped and hence why we can so readily label.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts here.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13872140041852080275noreply@blogger.com
